StarCraft II Discussion - FAQ & Posting Guidelines

Welcome to the StarCraft II Discussion Forum FAQ and Guidelines! Here we try to answer all of the commonly asked questions of the StarCraft II Forums. Please read through them if you are new to the forums. That will save us all a lot of time and unnecessary efforts. If you think of something that should be in here or something that should be changed, please contact one of the SC moderators through PM.

--------------------------------------
StarCraft II: Summary of Current Information:

From starcraft2.com:
StarCraft II continues the epic saga of the Protoss, Terran, and Zerg. These three distinct and powerful races will clash once again in the fast-paced real-time strategy sequel to the legendary original, StarCraft. Legions of veteran, upgraded, and brand-new unit types will do battle across the galaxy, as each faction struggles for survival.

Featuring a unique single-player campaign that picks up where StarCraft: Brood War left off, StarCraft II will present a cast of new heroes and familiar faces in an edgy sci-fi story filled with adventure and intrigue. In addition, Blizzard will again offer unparalleled online play through Battle.net, the company's world-renowned gaming service, with several enhancements and new features to make StarCraft II the ultimate competitive real-time strategy game.

In regards to general questions about the current development of StarCraft II, it would be beneficial to check StarCraft II's official website[/url] or the Official StarCraft II FAQ. For recent news and events, check StarCraft Legacy or other StarCraft fan-sites. As for everything else, we have our StarCraft II Discussion Forum.

--------------------------------------
General StarCraft II Information:

StarCraft2.com is the official website for Starcraft II. However, BlizzForums' sister site, Starcraft Legacy, also contains important information that may not be found on Starcraft II's official site. It's hard not to be excited with Starcraft II's announcement, but be sure that any information you present here is official, and not something that has been fan-inspired such as fan art or photoshopped images.

--------------------------------------
Forum's Posting Guidelines

Before you start posting here, make sure you're familiarized with the BlizzForum's posting guidelines and FAQs which can be found here. These should cover everything regarding "thread necromancery", flaming, advertising and so on...

Original Starcraft Subjects:
  • General StarCraft subjects belong to the original StarCraft forum. Please use this forum only for StarCraft II subjects.

Forum-Specific Banned Topics:
  • NO petitions - Blizzard doesn't give a damn about them.
  • Don't ask questions about the StarCraft II Video on Google or the StarCraft II concept fan-art - See "Rumors" section below.
  • Opening argues such as "Starcraft vs. _______" are old, annoying, and will result in us getting angry.
  • Don't open threads whose only purpose is to voice your complaint about everything you don't like about what you've seen so far.
  • Don't ask about when the next update is going to be. If there's some credible evidence that leads you to believe there will be an update soon, that's okay, but don't post threads simply asking when it's going to be.
  • Threads that complain about an abundance of complaint threads. It's hypocrisy and spam. Threads that complain about StarCraft II are constructive to the forums in that they discuss any prevalent flaws in the game. "Whining About Whiners" threads are not constructive and merely spam and annoy people.
  • Unless a release date is set by Blizzard, any estimates by gaming websites are purely speculation, so please refrain from posting threads believing that these dates are the real deal. I'm sure if you look, you'll still find a release date for StarCraft: Ghost (which Blizzard has "suspended indefinitely").
  • Threads about water units. Not only has Blizzard directly stated that Starcraft II will not feature water units, it simply makes no sense for water units to exist, as only half the tilesets available even have water on them.

Also, please browse the 2 previous pages of the forum before opening a new discussion, to prevent duplicated threads.

Posting:
Our forum is respected and noticed by Blizzard, and as such, our members are required to follow these guidelines when posting here:
  • Constructive criticism and suggestions are highly recommended.
  • Baseless complaints are borderline spam, and if seen too commonly, members will be given an infraction as such.
  • Insults against Blizzard and/or their employees will not be tolerated.

--------------------------------------
StarCraft II Rumors, Truths and Speculations:

At this point in time, it's quite difficult to have a complete collection of all of the information that has been released about Starcraft II. Until an updated section can be built in Starcraft Legacy, we will have a small section in this FAQ containing the information (Coming soon on StarCraft: Legacy).

In the past, there have been several mods of other games that have been mistaken as StarCraft II, so please be sure that any videos, art, and screenshots you see are official. With the wide collection of videos and screenshots provided to us from Blizzard from various press releases and events, it should no longer be difficult to distinguish StarCraft II from these mods.

For a continually updated list of all StarCraft II videos, see the StarCraft II Video Archive.

--------------------------------------
StarCraft's Secret Missions:

To bring some of you up to speed about the potential story of StarCraft II, here is the following information that extends beyond the single-player campaigns in StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood War.
  • Dark Origin:
By beating Brood War's Zerg mission #9 with more than 5 minutes left on the timer (without using the instant-win cheat), you will activate the secret mission, Dark Origin. In this mission, you play as Zeratul, and discover that Duran is not Kerrigan's pawn, but is a servant of an unnamed race. Duran's mission is to create Hybrids of Protoss and Zerg. Duran claimed that he had seeded the Hybrids on many worlds, and that Zeratul would not be able to find them all before they were complete. Who Duran works for is a mystery. It may be the Xel'Naga, and it may not be. There is no proof.
Text script of Dark Origin is currently unavailable.
  • *
  • Deception:
Deception is a bonus mission downloadable from Blizzard's map archives. This mission takes place shortly after Brood War. It follows three space pirates who infiltrate a Confederate Science Facility, and what they discover there. In this mission, you see Infested Stukov, resurrected and infested into the swarm. Also, at the end of mission, you are informed of the titles of "secret files" that you pick up throughout the map. The list of these secret files are contained in the text script.
Text script of Deception is currently unavailable.
  • *
  • Resurrection IV:
Resurrection IV takes place shortly after Deception. Raynor and an ancient Protoss warrior, Taldarin, are sent to Braxis by Artanis to de-infest Stukov using a new nano-tech serum. Raynor and Taldarin succeed, and escape. After their escape, the Protoss bombard the surface of Braxis. Zeratul's location is currently unknown.
Text script of Resurrection IV is currently unavailable.
Proof of Resurrection IV being canon (Search for 64)
Starcraft Legacy's Download Section is currently unavailable.

Note: A lot of information is not available until Starcraft Legacy has completed its upgrade.
--------------------------------------
StarCraft: Ghost

The game's production has been "suspended indefinitely". Please don't open threads regarding this matter unless there are news about it.

Regarding the effects of the suspended SC:Ghost game in terms of characters and storyline events, it is currently unknown how much of that information will be revealed in StarCraft II. However, because the game's production has been suspended/canceled, the information we learned about the game and its storyline can only be used as a speculation, and not as fact.

--------------------------------------
StarCraft's Books:

As of now, there are several StarCraft books written by Blizzard, as well as independent authors. Any books written by independent authors should not be considered canon. Regardless, information from any of the StarCraft books should not be held as fact if used in discussions or debates.

The books published after 2006 are most closely related to StarCraft II canon i.e. Queen of Blades, Nova, and the Dark Templar Saga.

--------------------------------------
StarCraft II's "Unknowns":

This is the section about the things in StarCraft II that we don't know now.
  • "Duran is a servant...", but who does he work for?
It is unknown as to who Duran really works for. Some say it is the Xel'Naga, others say that he works for another race. Hopefully, Starcraft II will shed light on this matter.

--------------------------------------
StarCraft II's Misconceptions:
  • Infested Protoss = Hybrids
Not true. Hybrids will be creatures born as a genetic fusion of Protoss and Zerg DNA. However, as Kerrigan has evolved from a mere infested Terran into a Terran/Zerg hybrid, infested Protoss could become genetic hybrids over time. Regardless, they would still not be the same creatures as Hybrids, since their genetic makeups will be different. This is, of course, assuming that the Zerg will gain the ability to successfully infest Protoss.
Note: Raszagal's mind was under the control of Kerrigan, she was not infested.

  • Infestation = Assimilation
Nope. A creature being infested by the Zerg does not guarantee their assimilation into the Zerg Swarm, although it does mark the possibility that that species could be assimilated soon. The original Overmind had the goal of assimilating the Terrans because of their growing psionic potential. Although Terrans are very easily infested, they clearly haven't been assimilated yet. When a species is assimilated, one or more of the following three things happen.
    • 1. The entire Zerg Swarm gains an evolutionary advantage (Example: carapaces allowing them to survive in the vacuum of space).
    • 2. A new Zerg strain is created.
    • 3. An existing strain is improved upon (Example: the addition of lurkers to the Hydralisk strain).

  • Xel'Naga = Hybrids
WTF?! There is no possible way for this to be true, using simple logic. How could the Xel'Naga be trying to create the perfect race if they were already a perfect race?

--------------------------------------

Note: This FAQ & Guidelines thread has been opened to the public for discussion regarding any changes that need to be made to continually better our forum.

Default Re: Starcraft II Discussion - FAQ & Guidelines

This idea hit me at work today.
How about a special chat room that will only be opened on certain days for a certain time? Dates and topic will change to allow differnt people to join the Conversation. Maybe even see if some gameing celebrities would give up a couple hours to join us. Like Blizzard employes or some Higher ranked players.
The date will be posted earlier in the week, along with suitable topics.
Chatrooms will allow for faster broader discussion without haveing to eat up more room in the threads.
If this is once again completely missing the point tell me now so i can stop trying so hard. ^_^

I think you are missing the point a bit, since I believe that goes a bit beyond the forums. Besides, most "Starcraft celebrities" are sometimes a bit hard to get in contact with. Since I started working at SCL a few months ago, there's only been one interview mentioned. I'm not saying you can't organize a few people from the forums to set up chats with, but it's beyond the obligations of the forum moderators to organize or manage (unless one had the time and interest in setting it up).

"As a kid it was traumatic. It was one thing for your teacher to tell you that life was harsh for settlers headed West in the decades after the Louisiana Purchase. It was a lot more chilling to watch as your three children, "Boobs, Fart, and Winky" drowned in the Colorado river shortly before your wife died of diarrhea."

I extended the ban on Starcraft vs. Warcraft discussions to Starcraft vs. anything. Obviously in a Starcraft forum, Starcraft will be the clear winner, no matter what it's paired up against.

Also, I don't remember closing this thread. To whoever did close it, this thread is supposed to be open for forum discussion.

SC1 vs. SC2 is acceptable so long as it's a comparison of various attributes from both games. What I don't want to see is (Units from) SC1 vs. (Units from) SC2. That's what the SC vs. ____ ban is on, because you get the SC vs. WC or SC vs. SST (Starship Troopers), and it turns into a battle between the hardcore SC fans and anyone who may favor the other side.

The FAQ & Guidelines has been updated to include our posting requirements. Although there is discussion allowed on our forum's guidelines, there will be no negotiating as to the rules regarding posting. If our forums are to continue to be held in high regard by Blizzard, then we need to clean up our act. Those who can't abide by them may quickly find themselves needing to find another forum to complain in.

Made a few changes and updates. If anyone can offer any advice to improve our summary of the current state/description of StarCraft II, I'd be welcome to hear it. One thing I did want to keep away from was making this ridiculously long, which is why I linked to the official FAQ instead of copying bits and pieces of it.
