Default New formations?

Do you think implementing different formations would be good? In the video, I noticed they tend to space out almost like a grid at times. Think they always do that, or we can change it in some way (spread out, compact, circle), or maybe even just have access to 3 during a game (random number), but there are more and we have to choose which 3? That would put in strategy even before the game starts...

i hope they do have formations just like they did in Home world with the circle, square or swarm they would be good if we could have that option. they can come in handy in battles

They already have that. You move units into a position, and command them to move as a group, then, assuming there's enough room at their destination, they'll take up the same spots. "The Hammer Falls" is a great example of this with the 8 Marines and the Firebat.

However, there's the issue of units that move at different speeds... I don't think StarCraft I did that.

Yup, it did. If a unit could move where it was ordered while in formation, it would.

I mean, the units didn't seem to stay in formation until they stopped moving (if they had different speeds).

Units would try to reform formations at the end point. But would walk single file en route, and faster units would speed off ahead. This really defeats the formation.

I'm certain they will incorporate toggleable Formation Movement as an advancement feature for their Starcraft II engine. However, it should be better than Warcraft III's formation feature. In Warcraft III, their idea of "formation" is that the fastest units will slow down to the speed of the slowest unit in the group. So if you group a Demon Hunter (fast melee hero) with an Uprooted Ancient (a walking tree building), the Demon Hunter will literally put a boulder in the pockets of his baggy-ass ghetto pants and slow himself down to the speed of the Ancient, which as you may suspect, is slower than that of a handicapped snail.

Having slow units move at the same speed as slower units is actually somethin I see as beneficial.

You would think, but what happens is your units dont get to were they need to be quick enough, the best way to make it work would be 2 control groups, one of fast attack units, and then the bulk of your fighting force. and most of the time it still is a tricky and hard to exacute plan when you meet with the full enemy force without all of your units.

I would really like formations... not many, just something like "opened formation"-"closed formation"-"circle" and thats enough

I disagree. Overlords exist for a reason - to control Zerg units and make them do what they're told.
