well if u red the sc novels (which are approved by blizzard) in speed of darkness, it describes the terran suits as giving them additional speed and strength...it also keeps them warm, and in some cases keeps their bodily vitalities in check...it can also inject chemicals (stimpacks) to enhance their performance

Btw, like wyvern said, i doubt bayonets are used as much today because melee combat isn't that common but I'm pretty sure they do get alot of training in close quarter. I think using shovels in melee combat are better than bayonet if you know what i mean
yes but the bayonets of today double as combat knives and troops in iraq may use them while raiding buildings

Even Tychus has a custom set of armor (Which is wierd seing as how it was just pieced together. It says "Suck it down" in white writing, and it also has a picture of a lady in the upper right corner

Don't see how marines would all have the exact same gun. Maybe some prefer having belt feed?

SC novels aren't cannon. I do think they enhance strength and speed though.

On another note: Knives are more dangerous up close then bullets far away. They can be aimed easier, and if your calm enough you may able to hit something vital. Although I do agree unless there some sort of energy blade, they have to go.

The marines now look like warcraft knights.. Lose the shields... make the guns bigger..

But against a marines power suit or protoss shields or zerg carapace they wouldn't really do anything... hell in the BW intro cinematic the gauss rifle couldn't even get through the lings carapace on their heads and he unloaded like 200 shots into it.

...snip...
They are being promoted by Blizzard and I don't think Metzen and his team would give the "go ahead" to a novel that contradicts with the official fluff. Would be kinda illogical. It's the same thing with the Warhammer and Warhammer 40K novels: they are also considered "fluff".

That's why the average marine doesn't retire from his career in the corps. Marines work in fire-groups and use weight of fire to bring down their foes because one gauss rifle isn't gonna stop the average foe.

The pen is mightier than the sword, if it is sharpened to a fine point, dipped in deadly poison and thrown from 10 feet away. But really, you're better off with a sword.

Knives are rarely used in combat nowadays ('cept in elite units such as the Marine Corps as far as I've heard). Used as a bayonet, there's too much of a risk that it'll get stuck in the enemy soldier and you could get killed while wasting precious seconds trying to yank it out of his corpse, besides, a good thrust of the rifle to the ribcage can break their ribs, rendering them combat inefficient - you don't need a bayonet to effectively neutralize an enemy in hand-to-hand combat with a rifle.

Knives are used for maintenance tasks and various survival things (i.e. skinning rabbits and stuff, cutting branches and stuff for primitive makeshift traps and/or other makeshift stuff) - that sort of thing. Most modern infantry allegedly rarely ever get close enough to the enemy to engage in hand-to-hand, except perhaps in house-to-house fighting, but in those cases, you usually clean out rooms with gunfire (bullets ricochet off walls, making the inside of a room extremely dangerous to anyone hiding in there) and grenades.

Realism aside, Starcraft never was about realism to begin with, so I can deal with the bayonets. The shield, however, is a different story - I think it just looks silly.

its hard to wield a rifle in close combat especially the guns those size. so it would pay to have a bayonet ready.

Knives are still issue weapons along with bayonets and always will be. There some situations when aiming a gun and pulling a trigger isn't as effective. Like lets say you turn a corner and you turn out to be inches from an enemy in standard training your gun is currently pointed down to avoid friendly fire. But you can still use your bayonet simply by moving forward and while your oppent is scrambling to lift there gun there fate is sealed with a knife wound to the chest.

perhaps bayonet means that marines return a little melee damage when attacked by a melee unit?

you need a bayonet to push the enemy aside and then shoot....

btw didn't they get out dated after ww1? in ww2 they didn't even have a purpose besides for suicide runs lol

on wiki it says bayonets are good for poking an enemy to see if he's dead and raise troop moral for only modern day pluses. It lowers accuracy heavily and in the civil war bayonets accounted for less than 1 percent casualties.

(guess the movies exaggerated that :P)
