Default terran dropships land?

Gamevideos has a nice video of the full narrated demo, you can find it here:
http://www.gamevideos.com/video/id/11671

I was watching it, and you can see pretty early in the video, at about 1:27, two terran dropships land and drop off some marines, then takeoff quickly. Three more dropships do the same about 3-4 seconds later.

Any thoughts? I think that in the very early stages of the original, the dropships landed as well, perhaps they're going back to their roots?

Default Re: terran dropships land?

knowing that they do actually land makes me wonder if they are susceptible to ground attacks while they are landed. A drop ship full of guys getting hit by a couple siege tank blasts makes a happy crunch I think.

Hope so. With the new graphics, Blizz just can't have units pop 20 feet below the Dropship anymore. However, it seems every unit in the ship can get out at once now, so that seems a nice plus.

Seems the units still get out pretty fast though.

I think they are trying to make it so that marines cannot escape from a battle as quickly. As in, they want the Reapers to fill the harassment role, not marines in dropships.

Watching further in the demo, at 14:15 two dropships come out. One of them drops a ground unit, and the other a seige tank.

It looks like the first unit out of the dropship gets dropped as soon as the "landing" animation begins. Since both of these dropships only had one unit, they took off literally a split-second after landing.

I hadn't thought about it they would be vulnerable to ground fire while landing. That's certainly interesting, and I wonder how it would play out.

I think it's better to have a realistic landing effect for air transport. The way it works in the original SC for "drops on the fly" can get really lame, no warning at all and very difficult to anticipate/counter.

1. If they are open to ground attacks, it'll be but for a second
2. If you think about it, it's probably faster. Compared to dropping one at a time, they unload all at once.

Dropships now land. Protoss now use phase prisms to get around. Will they do anything for the Zerg? The Nydus Worm doesn't seem to need creep

Yes, and that Nydus Worm just need to open his/her mouth and then all of sudden loads of Zergling pop out of nowhere. Ain't realistic if you ask me :/

I am a bit sceptical about the instant teleporting of armies. Wouldn't this take away from the strategy of securing good positions (cliffs or islands) and lose some of the tactics. If the terrans have good defences in place, then no-problemo, just teleport around it? This IMO would lose some of the tactical maneuvering of the game. Remember how difficult it was to infiltrate a secure terran defensive formation (bunker/seige tank/turret)? Instant teleporting would be cool, but it must be limited or it will take away from the positional advantages.

Perhaps reaper could drop without that dropship lands? It could be really nice!

And how does that nydus work work?
It's some sort of burrowed transport? It loads some units as a overlord then burrows and go underground until where you want to pop up?
Or it works in a similar way of the nydus canal? zergling will enter from its ...ehm...tail... and then exit from its mouth?

Units come out instantly to compensate for the landing graphic. Sadly, this means moving drops can't be done anymore. It's one of the cooler finer points which I loved.
